What to Wear for Maternity Photoshoot | Natasha Maternity

What to Wear for Maternity Photoshoot. The purpose of hiring a photographer for your maternity session is to show off your bump and milestone.

You want to wear something that will make your beautiful bump stand out. So let’s make sure you wear the right colors, patterns, fabrics, etc… While also being comfortable and confident!

The most important thing is to choose something that will create an outstanding silhouette for your maternity photoshoot. We want your outfit to allow your baby bump to stand out, so here is what to look for:

  • A dress, skirt, or top that is tight right above the belly.
  • A dress, skirt, or top that will begin to flare right before the belly to allow movement during your session. We DO NOT want a dress, top. or skirt that is tight all around the belly, this will take away the flattering silhouette
  • Length is recommended to be down to the floor to create a more appealing silhouette. This will also allow you to have something to play with during your session. We DO NOT want a short dress! The belly will create a gap between the dress and your body which will cause your belly to get lost. Remember, we want something that will create an outstanding silhouette.

What Colors Should I Wear?

You want to wear colors that will have your belly stand out, not hiding.

  • Colors that will cause the belly to hide are dark colors like black, navy blue, dark purple, and gray tones. Believe it or not, some bright colors will also conceal your belly. So DO NOT wear neon/bright colors.
  • You want colors that are settling that still allow your belly to stand out, such as neutral colors. Neutral colors are muted shades that appear to lack color but often have underlying hues that change with different lighting, the camera catches these colors great. Neutral colors consist of beige, taupe, cream, and browns.

What fabrics should I wear or avoid?

I want you to be as comfortable as possible so you should avoid any fabrics that are stiff. Stiff fabrics will cause your silhouette to lose its figure because it won’t be flowy.

  • You also want to avoid stretchy fabrics that will expose your undergarments. Stretchy fabric will also cause your silhouette to lose its figure.
  • You want to wear fabrics that will have a nice flow to them. Such as polyester or rayon.

What patterns are best for maternity photoshoots?

Don’t get me wrong, you can never go wrong with a solid color for photoshoots. Patterns can be really tricky, you need to be able to choose the right now!

  • Lace or crepe fabrics are nice and elegant for maternity photoshoot.
  • DO NOT choose large patterns that are not flattering or discracting.
  • You want medium sized patterns.
  • Avoid any patterns that are busy, tiny, and distracting. This will hide your baby bump and silhouette.
